PREP 2 - Early Childhood Services (ECS)

Register now for the 2009-2010 School Year!

It is never too early to start planning for the coming school year. If your child with Down syndrome will be 2 1/2 years old by September 1, 2009, you can register for the 2009-2010 ECS class. Please direct any questions regarding this year's classes to Kim Doig, ECS Supervisor, at 282-5011, extension 117. Registration for the 2009-2010 classes has begun!

PREP's enriched kindergarten classes for children 2 1/2 to 5 1/2 years of age nurtures the love of learning! Each student has an Individual Program Plan (IPP) that identifies goals for social, behavioural, school readiness, communication and motor skill development. Individual speech therapy is offered daily and parents are encouraged to participate in therapy sessions. Occupational therapy and physiotherapy are provided on a regular consult basis to the class, and on an individual basis as needed. Physiotherapy services are provided by Calgary Youth Physiotherapy. Music therapy is provided by JB Music Therapy.

Students in the three year old program attend classes three mornings per week, while students in the four year old program attend two mornings per week. Parents are required to volunteer once a month to observe and "learn by doing". To ensure effective information sharing with parents and generalization of new skills to home and school, the PREP staff make several home visits during the school year. It is highly recommended that children also participate in community preschool programs; fees for dual placements are covered by the PUF grant. PREP staff are available for visits to the community placement on request. Upon graduation from the ECS classes, PREP staff assists families in making a smooth transition to the community school.
