Board of Directors

Curtis Slater – President

I am dad to four rambunctious boys, and my oldest son has Down syndrome. I am also a manager at Vecova, a non-profit charitable research and service agency that supports persons with disabilities. My work inspires me because I interact daily with dedicated and compassionate people who are determined to improve the lives of people who need it the most.

And not many Presidents can say they have a black-belt in karate, but I can!

Barbara Tien – Executive Director

I am the Executive Director of PREP, and a Speech Pathologist. I am one of the lucky ones who found a calling in life. All the glory of being an Executive Director pales in comparison with the fun and gratification of teaching children to talk. It keeps me young and a kid a heart!

My hero, Tommy Douglas, was the champion of universal health care in Canada. I believe that a great society cares for those in need and that social services are essential. As founder of PREP, I wanted to provide families with no cost or affordable services.

In my spare time, I am an avid reader but know I need to get off the couch! To that end I enjoy walking our dog Nova and also continue to be a recreational runner and tennis player. Each gives me the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors where I am energized by Mother Nature. When vacation time comes around, I love to travel to the great cities of the world.

Belinda Mendes – Director

I have a MA in Counselling Psychology and work as a Family Counsellor on the Mental Health Unit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. I am also a mom to two wonderful children. When our first child was born with Down syndrome, I felt like I had another calling of sorts – to be more involved in his world. He is my inspiration, one of my main reasons for being on the PREP Board of Directors.

When I get some free time, you’ll find me gardening, reading, journaling or spending time with friends and family. I am also the first one to hit the dance floor as I love to dance!

Heather Cobb – Director

I am a Sexual Health Promotion Facilitator with Alberta Health Services. I love to see passion in people – for anything, from someone who speaks animatedly about a movie they love, to a passion for a cause, or commitment to a career.

I volunteer as a way to give back and share my professional skills, but also to continue to learn things myself.

You might be surprised to learn that I once jumped out of an airplane for charity – good news is that I was wearing a parachute!

Miranda Specht – Director

I am a mom of two wonderful children, and currently hold two volunteer positions – one of which is with PREP. I choose to sit on the PREP Board of Directors because I believe so strongly in inclusion and am inspired by people overcoming adversity with a positive attitude. I hope that my involvement will help make a difference in the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families.

I believe that a hero is someone who steps in to help without looking for recognition.

In my spare time, I like to spend time with my family – preferably in Arizona or Disneyland!

Adrienne Murray – Director

I am taking a break from my oil and gas career to stay at home with my two wonderful children and a very energetic Labrador puppy. I am inspired everyday by both my children – my son, who has Down syndrome, because he has an incredible joy for life despite the extra challenges he faces, and my older daughter because she has loved and supported her brother unconditionally since the day he was born.

I am volunteering on the BOD because PREP has had such a positive impact on my son’s life. I see it as a great way to combine my business expertise with my passion for the future of PREP, and the inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome.

Jean Lemire – Director

I am an accountant and the proud dad of an inquisitive preschooler. Our little guy has Down syndrome, and PREP has been a huge part of his life since he was 6 months old.

I am inspired by ongoing learning opportunities and building long-term relationships – both of which are integral to being on the Board.

Amidst the busy tempo of life, our family makes time for fun. You’ll find us outdoors – slo pitch and camping in the summer, and snowboarding in the winter.

Mark Adolf – Director

I am a business entrepreneur and a proud family man raising two young sons. While I don’t have a direct connection to Down syndrome, I am inspired to volunteer for PREP because I believe everyday people can work together to make their community a better place to be for all of us.

When I am not working or volunteering, I am busy enjoying the great outdoors with my family – a source of great inspiration to me. A sense of humour is also very important to me – when I was in Grade 12, I enrolled in Clown School, and still have a couple of tricks up my sleeve!

Cate Wilkins – Secretary

Before my second child was born, I had it all mapped out. Another maternity leave and back to work in my chosen field of Corporate Communications. But plans changed when our son was born with Down syndrome. Since then, our family has been taking the road less traveled with our incredible guy! PREP has been a huge part of our life since he was merely 6 months old, and so I am proud to be on the Board. I love spending time with my family in the great outdoors – skiing, hiking, tubing, swimming – you name it we will try it!

Suzy Sundararaj – Treasurer

I currently work in the Enmax Finance Department. I am also the mom of two wonderful children, one of whom happens to have Down syndrome. She inspires me every day with her positive attitude and determination to succeed! PREP has been a big part of our life, and so I joined the Board because I know what a valuable resource it is for families like ours. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and taking vacations with my family.
